El Quimilar neighbourhood, City Bell, La Plata
El Quimilar neighbourhood was created in the mid-90s when a farm of about 8 hectares was divided into lots and subdivided by the family that owned it.
6 blocks were laid out with approximately 16 individual plots each, distributing them among the heirs and then each one decided what to do with his share.
Plots were then sold to third parties and little by little it began to be populated with new families, generally young couples, some with young children.
The neighbourhood had a single entrance which was accessed by a poor asphalt street bordering the Club Hípico y Gold City Bell on one side and the Roca train railways on the other, in the form of a long corridor of about 300m in length.
The internal streets were made of an improved draft road that in some sections became impassable on rainy days. Even on the furthest street from the entrance (464) an old bed of a small stream passed through.
The residents organized themselves in order to provide the neighbourhood with better living conditions (perimeter fencing, street repairs, lighting, etc.).
The neighbourhood was surrounded by the Club, the train railways and in the background by a farm land with Olympic wire where cows and horses grazed mainly.
Around the year 2000, the owners of the adjacent farm divided up about 3 hectares that were attached to El Quimilar, but which they would baptize as the “ barrio del Golf”.
For several more years this was the configuration of the neighbourhood, continuing with its only vehicular entrance and its great tranquillity due to the low rate of inhabitants.
When an act of insecurity (kidnapping) occurred in 2001 that shocked the then few neighbours (about 50 families), private security was hired with the solidarity contribution of 75% of the families.
This service is still maintained, although increased in complexity and volume due to the growth of the neighbourhood, both in area and in the number of families that live there.
By 2023, this neighbourhood already has more than 350 families, several new housing projects, and an area of approximately 65 hectares made up of 41 blocks.
Located 700 meters from buses and 1000 meters from the train station, it is just a 10-minute walk from the City Bell center , which has a wide range of shops and gastronomy.
